The Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) has observed the urgent need to draft and enact a piece of legislation that will address loopholes of presidential financial excesses, once and for all.

PeP President Sean Tembo says this is because the current financial regulations are not adequate to address issues to do with expenditure on Presidential trips, as evidenced by the reported spending of about K17 million of taxpayer’s money on largely personal expenses during the President’s trip to the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, in September 2015.

Mr. Tembo says given then dire levels of poverty and squalor across the country, issues to do with resource utilization cannot and should not be subjective and must not be left to the discretion of any individual.

He says this proposed law must also address the issue of presidential gifts and must establish a threshold of the maximum monetary value of a gift or gifts which a Republican President can be allowed to accept from well wishers.
