GEARS remind ECZ of its mandate on voter registration

Governance, Elections, Advocacy, Research Services (GEARS) Initiative Zambia has reminded the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) of its mandate to conduct continuous voter registration as provided by the Electoral Process ACT.

GEARS Initiative Zambia Executive Director MacDonald tells QTV News that under section 7 of the Electoral Process Act, the ECZ is expected to conduct continuous voter registration which the electoral body is not doing at the moment.

Mr. Chipenzi says what the ECZ is doing is periodical registration which he says is not supported by the law.

He says the excuse by the ECZ that it has no money for this is exercise cannot hold water as continuous voter registration is law.

Mr Chipenzi has also noted with concern that electoral reforms have suffered major setbacks under the PF administration, saying the sooner the government realizes that this is the cause of political differences in Zambia, the better.
