Govt records 15 new cholera cases in Lusaka

The Ministry of Health has recorded a total of 15 new cholera cases in the last 24 hours in Lusaka with no deaths recorded.

And Health Minister Dr Chilufya has emphasized the need for investing in universal access to clean water to completely curb the outbreak of cholera in the country.

Addressing the media on the sidelines of a high level on cholera prevention held with the Germany government, Dr Chilufya said the cases have been recorded in Kuku, Chawama, Kanyama and Chipata areas of Lusaka while only a few cases have been recorded outside Lusaka in Shibuyunji District.

He has disclosed that the country has recorded a total of 4, 353 cumulative cases nationwide with 88 deaths of which 4, 028 cases and 75 deaths have been recorded in Lusaka only.

The minister has stressed that prevention measures will not be downed just because a downward trend of the cases has continued to be recorded.

He has since disclosed that a total of 4, 275 cases have been successfully treated and discharged further stating that government through his ministry is committed to ensuring that it completely curbs the outbreak of cholera even in years to come.

And Dr Chilufya has noted the need for concerted efforts in ensuring that ground water is protected stating that the outbreak of cholera is call to action to ensure that the game is upped in ensuring that there is universal access to clean and safe drinking water for all the people.

Speaking earlier Water and Sanitation Minister Dr. Dennis Wanchinga said his ministry is committed to ensuring that sources of eater are protected through finding people to invest in solid waste management.

And Germany Ambassador to Zambia Achim Burkart noted the need for the country to come up with long term strategies to protect water sources as a way of ensuring that everybody has access to clean and safe drinking water by 2030.

The high level meeting on cholera prevention between the Zambia and Germany government was being held under the theme, “prevention of cholera outbreaks in the future, safe ground water management.”
