Conjoined twins shifted out of ICU

twins23Nine months old former Siamese twins’ Mapalo and Bupe have today been discharged from the intensive care unit.

Mapalo who is currently weighing 8.7 kgs is well and learning to sit while Bupe whose recovery has been slow is currently weighing 7.6 kgs, is much improved, off the oxygen and feeding well.

On 2nd February the twins who where conjoined underwent a seven hours surgery for their separation conducted by a team of 30 local surgeons at the university teaching hospital after being admitted in the hospital for 8 months.

Addressing the media after the discharge from intensive care unit and handover of the twins to the mother and newborn hospital neonatal Intensive care unit D11, surgeon Dr Robert Zulu said the surgeons and doctors are happy with the recovery of the twins so far and they now look forward to their normal growth.

He has since expressed gratitude for the support that the hospital has received from the ministry and the nation as a whole.

But pediatrician in charge of the neonatal ward Dr Kunda Kapembwe has however disclosed that the twins will not be discharged anytime soon as there is need for thorough observation and the parents need to be taught on how to care for the twins before they can be referred to Mansa general hospital.

And parents to the twins Mr. and Mrs. Mwape expressed gratitude to the surgeons, hospital management, government and the well wishers for the support that has been shown to the well being of the twins from the time they were admitted to the hospital till now.
