Teachers’ code of Ethics launched

The Teaching Council of Zambia (TCZ) has developed a code of ethics for teachers in the country.

Speaking during the launch, General Education Minister Dennis Wanchinga, says the code of ethics should be able to redeem the teaching fraternity from embarrassing vices it has been entangled in.

Dr Wanchinga says it is unfortunate that some teachers have lost their jobs due to unprofessional conduct.

The minister hopes that with the launch of the code of ethics, there will be zero tolerance to alcohol abuse, teacher-pupil relationships and corruption in the sector.

Speaking earlier, Council registrar Dr. Ebby Mubanga says the code of ethics will guide teachers on how best to execute their duties diligently whilst exhibiting high moral values through exemplary conduct both on and off duty.

He further says it is envisaged that this development will increase levels of efficiency and moral behavior in the teaching fraternity thereby raising the status of the profession.

Dr Mubanga says the code is intended to foster and promote professionalism and enhance public confidence in the teaching profession.

And Teaching Service Commission Chairperson Stanley M’hango hopes the code of ethics will enhance discipline in the teaching service.
