The European Union has given Zambia 1.8 million Euros under the second European Union Development Fund (EDF) Aviation Sector Support Programme.

The EDF is a 4-year project designed to support the development of a reliable and effective aviation sector in Zambia.

EU Head of Section, Adam Grodzicki says the project will also help Zambia’s Aviation Authority and Aviation stakeholders to improve their compliance with international aviation standards, in terms of air safety and security certification as well as oversight.

Speaking during the commemoration of the 73rd International Civil Aviation Day in Lusaka, Mr. Grodzicki explains that the project will also implement targeted initiatives in the areas of capacity enhancement such as improvements in the Civil Aviation Authority Management System and strengthening of the institutional and regulatory framework.

He has since urged officers tasked with the implementation of the project to ensure that this is done with diligence by ensuring that the resources provided are used for the intended purposes.

Speaking earlier, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Misheck Lungu says the aviation sector has made strides especially considering the steps undertaken as well as investments to support the growth of the sector which remains key to the development of the economy.

In a speech read on his behalf, civil aviation authority Board Chairperson Jimmy Zulu, Mr Lungu says Zambia’s central positioning as well as good economic outlook puts the country in a good position to become a regional hub in Africa.

This year’s International Civil Aviation Day is being commemorated under the theme: “Working together to ensure that no country is left behind”.
