UPND pondering impeachment of President Lungu

Stephen KatukaThe opposition UPND says it will consider tabling the motion to impeach President Edgar Lungu in Parliament following his recent statement on the judiciary.

UPND Secretary General Stephen Katuka said this in a letter to opposition Patriots for Economic Progress (PeP) president Sean Tembo who has written to the UPND asking the party to consider urging their Members of Parliament to move a motion in parliament to start the impeachment process of President Lungu.

Mr Katuka says the constitutional breaches by President Lungu are of national concern, especially that the matter of interfering with the judiciary is not the first one.

He says the UPND National Management Committee will table the matter when it meets.

And Mr. Tembo says he is extremely overjoyed with the positive response from the UPND to invoke the provisions of Article 108 of the Republican Constitution and move a motion for the impeachment of the President.

Mr. Tembo says President Lungu violated Article 122 of the Republican Constitution by interfering with the functional independence of the Judiciary.
