Lusaka cholera cases rise to 298

DR. CHITALU CHILUFYAHealth minister and some Lusaka member of parliament this morning led scores of traders to clean surroundings at Soweto market

Dr. Chilufya led the traders to clean various sections of the market and collected garbage from undesignated dumping areas such as drainages.

Speaking in an interview after the exercise, dr. Chilufya has disclosed that cholera cases has increased to 298 from the time the disease broke out in Lusaka in October this year.

And dr. Chilufya has warned that government will soon stop trading of fresh foods in some areas due to the outbreak of cholera.

He says his ministry will ensure that trading of fresh food in contaminated areas is stopped to avoid the escalation of the epidemic.

Dr. Chilufya has since assured traders that government is doing everything possible to ensure that the cholera outbreak is contained in Lusaka.

He also urged the traders to keep their market stalls and surroundings clean to guarantee good health and avert cholera outbreak.

Dr. Chilufya has since advised the public to refrain from buying food from vendors, which he said do not meet basic hygienic standards.

And Matero Member Of Parliament who is also water development, sanitation and environmental protection minister Lloyd Kaziya says government is determined to ensure that it unblock all major drainages in Lusaka to prevent outbreak of common diseases.

Mr. Kaziya says the clearing of the drainages is meant to prevent the outbreak of diarrheal diseases like cholera as a result of blocked drainages and also to maintain a clean environment in the province.

And Lusaka Provincial Minister Japhen Mwakalombe has appealed to traders to ensure traders’ conduct their businesses in a conducive environment.

Mr. Mwakalombe has also urged individuals to contribute to the cleaning of their environment and avoid blocking drainages.

Meanwhile Kanyama Member of Parliament Elizabeth Phiri has asked traders to strive to keep healthy habits, since they are the vulnerable group, as far as cholera and other health issues are concerned.
