The British Council has reported three Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to the Zambia Police for suspected fraud.
Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo has confirmed the development to QTV News in a statement that the Zambia Police Service has finally received a formal report from the British Council on the suspected fraud by one of the UKAid funded projects which is the Zambia Accountability Project (ZAP).
Ms Katongo says the report was made on the 09th November, 2017 to the Zambia Police Anti Fraud Unit.
She says the fraud is said to have occurred between 01st January, 2016 and 01st September, 2017.
She explains that the revelation follows an internal investigation carried out by the British Council.
Ms Katongo says the Zambia Police has since opened an inquiry file in the matter.
ZAP consists of NGOs among them; Zambia Women’s Lobby Group, the Southern African Centre for e Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD), Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP), Young African Leaders Initiative – Zambia (YALI) and Transparency International Zambia (TIZ).
Recent media reports suggested that the NGOs had embezzled about US$3.5 million.
Meanwhile Police in central province have arrested two women for allegedly killing another woman who was nine months pregnant.
A 21 year old woman has been identified as agnes daka of chief kalindawalo, petauke district also of chisamba district
This occurred in central province on 11th november, 2017 around 19:45 hours at 22 miles along lusaka road in chisamba district.
Police spokesperson esther katongo stated that the pregnant woman sustained cuts from a broken bottle.
The accused persons are detained in police custody while the body of the deceased is lying in chisamba rural health center mortuary.
Meanwhile, police in nyimba district of eastern province have arrested an 18-year-old man for murdering his 56-year-old uncle over a family garden.
