PAZ hails poultry farmers

LAYERSThe Poultry Association of Zambia has applauded poultry farmers in the country for making the country an alternative in the export of hatching eggs in the SADC region and some parts of the COMESA region replacing South Africa.

Poultry Association of Zambia Executive Director Dominic Chanda says this development is as a result of the reduction in stock feed prices following the high production of maize and soya beans and the stability of the exchange rate.

He has also noted that the measure taken by government to remove duty on imported stock feed ingredients which will come into effect in January 2018 is also key in reducing the cost of stock feed and eventually poultry products

Mr Chanda has told Q-news that this will lead to a number of poultry farmers who had been forced out of business to get back into poultry production.

Mr. Chanda says he foresees further improvements in the sector if the country records another bumper harvest, good Soya beans production and the kwacha remains stable.

He says there is currently an increase in export of hatching eggs as the country is servicing Angola, Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe including South Africa which is no longer exporting hatching eggs due to the outbreak of the Avian influenza.
