Tayali petitions Police to stop UPND rally

Police in Lusaka say they cannot stop the UPND rally scheduled for Kanyama tomorrow without an alert from the Ministry of health.

This follows a petition by EEP president Chilufya Tayali asking the Police to cancel the UPND rally considering the cholera outbreak in the area.Tayali Chilufya

Speaking after presenting his petition to Lusaka province Police Commission Nelson Phiri, Mr Tayali said the police commissioner has indicated to him that there are no legal provisions compelling him to hamper the planned rally, unless the ministry of health issues an alert that the gathering is a health hazard.

Mr. Tayali has since appealed to the UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema to be considerate and cancel the rally in view of the cholera outbreak.

Mr. Tayali tells Q-news that the rally is a danger to public health.

But when contacted for a comment, UPND Spokesperson Charles Kakoma dismissed Mr. Tayali as a misguided politician.

Mr. Kakoma says Mr. Tayali is not a position to talk about health matters in Kanyama.

He wonders why Mr. Tayali has petitioned against the UPND rally, when the nation is from hold the national day of prayer and fasting where multitudes turned up.

Mr Kakoma says such gatherings could have posed more danger to public health than the planned UPND rally.
