Former Zambia National Students Union vice-president Prince Ndoyi has taken a swipe at government for treating mining companies with kid gloves.

Mr. Ndoyi has since challenged government to reintroduce windfall tax as an alternative for Zambians to benefit from their vast mineral wealth.

He has accused the World Bank and the IMF of using the country’s dependence on the two institutions to weaken government control on the mines.

Mr. Ndoyi notes that the refusal by Mopani Copper Mines to pay the revised electricity tariffs is unacceptable and immoral especially that poor Zambians are paying without protesting.

He has charged that the mines have been abusing their relationship with government which is culminating in them even refusing to pay for electricity at competitive tariffs.

Mr Ndoyi states that as the price of copper and other metals continue to boom on the world market, the country needs to benefit from this increase.
