YALI calls for law reforms

The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has called for law reforms in the country to make non-bailable offences bailable, so that innocent people do not remain incarcerated longer than necessary as it is an infringement of human rights.

YALI governance advisor Isaac Mwanza Tells QTV news that it is unfair that suspects are remanded in correctional facilities only to be freed through nolle prosequi or acquittal.Isaac Mwanza Yali

He says this in itself amounts to injustice, and that courts should therefore be given the latitude to decide who can, and who cannot get bail.

Mr Mwanza says there should be amendments to the country’s penal code and the criminal procedure code.

He points out that serious offences like murder and treason should be made bailable at the discretion of the court.
