Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) Spokesperson Antonio Mwanza has pleaded with the University of Zambia management to rescind its decision to prevent more than 850 students from writing exams next month over outstanding balances.

According to a an internal memo posted on several notice boards at the country’s highest learning institution along with the complete list of affected students, lecturers have also been instructed not to allow them to attend classes.

But Mr. Mwanza, who is also a former union leader at the university, has described the decision by management as extreme and counterproductive.

He has noted that with the hard economic times in the country, management should be lenient on the students as they are not having it easy in finding money to clear all the required fees.

Mr. Mwanza has appealed to the university management to consider allowing the students to write the exams and then withholding the results until they clear their balances.
