A Lusaka Police officer is nursing gunshot injuries at Matero first level hospital after he was mistakenly shot by a security guard last night.

Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo who has confirmed the development says the shooting incident happened around 03:00 hours today at Munsaka Lodge in 15 Miles area along Great North road in which Detective Sergeant Namomba of Ngwerere Police Station was shot on the right arm and grazed on the stomach by George Phiri aged 56, a security guard at the same Lodge.

Ms Katongo says this happened when the Security guard who was in the company of another guard identified as Misheck Chingumbe aged 36 of 15 Miles whilst on duty at the Lodge heard some noise and suspected that there were criminals.

She explains that the guard alerted the owner of the Lodge who then called for police intervention.

Ms Katongo says four Police officers rushed to the Lodge using a Toyota Land Cruiser for Emmasdale Police Station and when they reached the Lodge, they came out of the vehicle to patrol the area, and that it was at that point when the guard who was armed opened fire on the officers mistaking them to be criminals thereby shooting one officer.

She says the two guards have been detained in Police custody as investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile Ms Katongo says a male Juvenile aged seven months died on the spot while five others sustained injuries after they were involved in a road traffic accident which happened yesterday around 16:00 hours along Kamiteta road, Nchanga North in Chingola District.
