HRC counsels Police over sweeping powers

The Human Rights Commission has advised law enforcers against going beyond their limit in enforcing the law during the 90 days period of the threatened state of public emergency.

Commission Spokesperson Mweelwa Muleya says there is need to strike a balance between ensuring public security and protecting human rights of individuals.Muleya-HRC

He says it is government’s responsibility to see to it that individual human rights are protected in sustaining an environment of public security and peace.

Mr. Muleya has told Q-news that failure to protect and respect human rights may create a situation of public insecurity.

Mr. Muleya has also noted the urgent need for stakeholders such as the Zambia Police and the Human Rights Commission to start sensitizing members of public on how they should operate within the prescribed requirements of the proclamation of the threatened state of public emergency.
