Green Mumba scored the only goal of the match as Forest Rangers defeated Zesco United 1-0 in the MTN FAZ Super League on Sunday.

After a goalless first half, man-of-the-match Mumba broke the deadlock from a free kick which was won by Patrick Ilongo at the top of Zesco United’s penalty area in the 50th minute.

The goal was Mumba’s fourth of the campaign, making him his side’s top scorer and helped Forest Rangers to move up the standings from eleventh to fifth position with 24 points from sixteen matches, while Zesco United dropped from sixth to seventh on 23 points, with three games in hand.

“It was a tough match, being a local derby. We played a compact game and Zesco also played a compact game. But credit should go to the boys; we scored and defended our lead,” said Forest Rangers head coach Perry Mutapa after the match.

The defeat was Zesco’s second in the league, their first having come on match day 5 when they lost 1-0 away to Napsa Stars on 6 May 2017 and their coach, Serbian Zlatko Krmpotic was visibly disappointed.

Krmpotic was not happy with the many stoppages caused by Forest Rangers goalkeeper Daniel Mutshinemu requiring attention from medics, a situation he said was meant to run down the clock.

Despite match officials adding six extra minutes Krmpotic said: “The first half was good but we only played for ten minutes out of the forty five in the second half. It was not a conducive situation to play a flowing game.”
