Zambia commemorates International Widows Day

Vice President Inonge Wina has directed the Ministry of gender to spearhead the commemoration of the International widows Day next year.

The first ever recognized world widows day, was held on 23rd June, 2011 which was marked by a conference held in New York at the United Nations headquarters.

Today, Zambia has joined the rest of the world in commemorating this year’s international widows day at the Anglican cathedral of the holy cross, under the theme “You Never Alone”.

And speaking when she celebrated mass at the commemorations, Ms. Wina has stated that women who lose their husbands face many challenges but remains vital contributors to their families and the society.

She says it is because of this fact that widows should be accorded the necessary support.

The vice president has urged all advocates for gender equality to ensure that women’s voices are heard and steps taken to empower widows as part of efforts to advance gender equality.
