Govt collects K236.9 million from toll fees

Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Development Ronald Chitotela says K236.9 million was collected in road toll fees from January to May 2017.

And Mr Chitotela has told Parliament in a ministerial statement that country now has five operational inland toll stations.

He says about 141 direct and permanent jobs have been created under the national tolling programme have been created for the young people.

Mr Chitotela says the national road tolling programme will continue to be a beacon of hope and a model for sustainable financing of the road infrastructure projects in the country in view of the limited fiscal space and competing national needs.

He says the plan of government is to construct a total of 20 inland toll plazas over various structural designs across the country by the end of 2017.

He states that expected annual revenue from the 20 toll plazas is estimated at K670 million.

Mr Chitotela adds that by next year government intends to construct an additional 20 toll plazas to bring the total number to 40 toll stations.
