Zambia has over 595,000 child workers

Government has bemoaned the continued alarming cases of child labor in the country.

Acting Labour and Social Security Minister Michael Katambo has disclosed that there are over five hundred and ninety five thousand (595,000) child workers in various economic sectors in the country.Michael Katambo

Speaking during the commemoration of the World Day against Child Labour under the global theme: “In Conflicts and Disasters Protect Children from Child Labour”, Mr. Katambo says Government is doing everything possible to ensure that all forms of Child labour is completely eliminated.

Mr. Katambo says Government is in a process of establish more District Child Labour Committees in the remaining Districts to enhance enforcement of Child labour legislation.

Speaking at the same event, Human Rights Commission Vice Chairperson Kondwa Chibiye has called on Government to expedite the process of enacting the children’s code bill into law.

And International Labour Organization Country Director for Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique Alexio Musindo says the ILO is concerned with the continued child labour not only in Zambia, but in Africa as whole.
