Irate Choma residents in Batoka area last night set ablaze a police station accusing the police of failing to fight crime in the area.

The irate residents are believed to have blocked traffic around Batoka area claiming that the police were quick to arrest political opponents but were doing nothing in controlling crime in the country which was rampant.

Some patrons at one of the drinking places in Batoka last evening spotted someone in a bar armed with a knife and they wanted to mete out instant justice on him.

And Southern Province Police Commissioner Bonny Kapeso says the region is very peaceful and last night’s incident in Batoka was a separate incident that cannot subvert the province.

Commenting on the riots in Batoka that saw a police post set ablaze by irate citizens; Mr Kapeso says it is unfortunate that a mob wanted to take action on a suspect.

Police in Batoka picked the accused whom they detained in Pemba for being found armed in public.

Members of the public got incensed and vented their anger on infrastructure which is Batoka police post which they set on fire.

The Southern Police Chief has clarified that it is the duty of police to protect any suspect as they are merely suspects.

And Mr Kapeso has described reports linking the riot in Batoka to the displeasure of the arrest of UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema as outrageous.
