Judiciary not compromised – CJ

Chief Justice Ireen Mambilima says the Judiciary is not compromised contrary to assertions by some stakeholders in the country.

Justice Mambilima has also stated that there is no interference in the decisions made by the courts, stating that the judgments by judges are independent.

Justice Mambilima has told Q News that judges study cases thoroughly and judgments are made within the confinement of the Law.

Chief Justice says she has noted with concern the recent attacks on the judiciary by those who the court has not ruled in their favor.

Chief Justice has since appealed to stakeholders who feel aggrieved to follow the right procedure and appeal as opposed to attacking the Judiciary.

Meanwhile Justice Mambilima has justified her refusal to set up a tribunal to investigate Agriculture Minister Dora Siliya’s alleged involvement in the Malawi maize scandal.

She says there was no merit in the allegations brought before her.

Justice Mambilima has explained that she does not appoint a tribunal based on the complaints she receives, but has to weigh the allegations made.

meanwhile Chief Justice Ireen Mambilima says the key to the dispensation of justice is the timely disposal of cases.

Justice Mambilima says this can be achieved with a team of well-trained and real-time court reporters that are up to standard with the modern trends in Court reporting.

Speaking when she launched the Court Reporters Association of Zambia in Lusaka today, Justice Mambilima says the establishment of the Court Reporters Association of Zambia is therefore a big milestone in enhancing the performance of the Court Reporters and ultimately ensuring quick disposal of cases.

She says though the judiciary has faced quite a number of challenges due to lack of funding, it has embarked on the training of court reporters.

Justice Mambilima says the training of 33 out of the 58 court reporters is almost reaching completion, with the trainees only a few weeks away from graduating.

She also noted that the establishment of the Court Reporters Association of Zambia will enable the trained Court reporters get affiliated to the National Court Reporters Association based in the United States of America which is the mother body of all Court Reporting Associations in the world.

Speaking at the same event ,Court Reporters Association of Zambia (CRAZ) President Kambole Ng’andu says the Court Reporters will apply the knowledge and experience of verbatim, stenographic reporting, working with the Bench and Bar towards the upgrading and improvement of the criminal and civil justice systems so that the public is served with better information without delay.
