International Lbour Organisation (ILO) Director General Guy Ryder says there is need to create 600 million new jobs worldwide by 2030 if the UN development agenda’s goal of decent work for all is to be attained.
He says there are currently 200 million unemployed people worldwide.
And Mr Ryder says understanding the future of work is critical to constructing the response to people’s demands for social justice in today’s world.
QFM’s David Bweupe reports that Mr Ryder was speaking in Turin, Italy recently when he addressed the International Labour Standards Academy 2017 at the International Training Centre of the ILO which has drawn participants from Africa,Asia,Latin America and Middle East.
He noted that growing inequity, growing inequality and growing injustice are feeding into the critical life of countries.
Mr Ryder states that on the eve of the ILO centenary in 2019,the ILO is taking leadership in the global debate to better understand the forces which are transforming the world of work.
He says the ILO needs this understanding so that it is equipped to advance its mandate for social justice as it enters its second century of existence.
Mr Ryder says the initial stage in ILO’s centenary initiative on the future of work consists of national dialogues which have already taken place in more than 100 of its member states.
He states that later this year ILO will establish a high level commission to biggest e outcome of these dialogues and to report to the centenary conference in 2019.
He says the four themes of dialogues are based on the place of work in society, decent jobs for all,the organisation of work and production and essential debate about the governance of work.
