ZW&MA to introduce taxi meters

Zambia Weights and Measures Agency acting chief executive officer Adrine Muchima says the agency intends to introduce measuring meters for taxis that will be used to determine the fares they will be charging their customers.

Ms Muchima told Q news in an interview that there is need for taxi drivers in the country to have a basis on which they charge their customers which is fuel consumption based on distance.

Ms Muchima observes that currently taxis drivers are not able to determine whether they make profits through their fares, and customers are also not aware if they are fairly or unfairly charged when they book taxis.

She has stated that once the meters are installed taxis will be able to accurately measure the fuel used from one distance to another and tally it with the charges.

Ms Muchima has however explained that the agency will first embark on a sensitization campaigns on the benefits of the meters will have to taxi drivers and also customers.
