Government has hinted on plans to construct an international airport in Eastern Province following the conferring of Chipata with the city status.

Eastern Province Minister Makebi Zulu says this is despite feasibility studies that have been carried out to the effect that Chipata airport can be upgraded to an international airport.
Mr. Zulu has disclosed to QTV News that government’s desire however, is that a whole new international airport be constructed in Chipata City.
He says this is in an effort to encourage trade and value addition to locally grown agro products for onwards export.
Mr. Zulu states that this means that Chipata City and Eastern Province as whole will have to industrialize.
