ActionAid Zambia has implored local authorities in Chipata to provide the much needed strategic leadership following the city status conferred on the district.

Country Director Nalucha Ziba says Chipata City managers should be aware of the huge task bestowed on their shoulders, and realise that cities are the driving force for national economic development.

Ms. Ziba says it is important that the Mayor, Councillors and staff of the new Chipata city council collaborate to promote good governance tenets of transparency, accountability, participation and inclusive service delivery and allowing citizens to transform from passive beneficiaries of central government actions into active actors in the fight against poverty and the promotion of human development.

She has also called on government to acknowledge that the conferring of city status on Chipata and decentralization as a whole entail that an overwhelming array of functions are being delegated to local governments.

Ms. Ziba adds that the conferring of city status on Chipata should also match with requisite financial and human resources.
