CESCO urges sustainable solution to unfinished Freedom Way building

Citizens Environmental and Social Concern (CESCO) has called on relevant authorities to come up with a sustainable solution with regards the unfinished building situated at the corner of Freedom Way and Katondo street in Lusaka’s central business district.

CESCO Executive Director Conwell Hakapya tells QTV News that the high-rise building which remained in its finished state for decades is not only a safety concern to the many people that work nearby and passersby, but it is also posing as a health and environmental hazard to the entire city.

Mr Hakapya says the building has been turned into an open toilet and an illegal dump site for garbage and other uncouth human activities making it very unhygienic and a potential breeding ground for diseases.

He says it’s therefore important that the Ministry of housing and infrastructure development, Lusaka city council and the Zambia Environmental Management Agency take necessary action as soon as possible to either have the owners of the building complete it, or the building is demolished if it is not safe to be completed.

Mr Hakapya says the building is a major catastrophe in waiting, pointing out that just last Friday a man attempted to commit suicide by jumping off the 10th floor.

He adds that the metal crane that stands besides the building and hangs a number of meters above the building swings with wind and sometimes goes across the street overhead.
