Ministry of Health records 87 Anthrax cases

The Ministry of Health has disclosed that the country has recorded a total of 87 cases of Anthrax following the outbreak of the disease in Western Province last year.

Ministry of Health Spokesperson Dr. Kennedy Malama has attributed the delay in controlling the outbreak to people hiding contaminated meat in their homes.

Dr. Malama says no deaths have so far been recorded, and has expressed confidence that the disease will be contained soon.

Speaking during a media briefing, Dr. Malama says the disease could have been caused by some people who touched or ate contaminated meat.

Dr. Malama who is also Director of Health Promotion, Environment and Social Determinants says the ministry has come up with various intervention measures such as the distribution of information, communication and educational materials, and active surveillance by authorities.

And Dr. Malama has revealed that a total of 20 cases of Cholera have been recorded in Chiengi district of Luapula Province.

He says no deaths have been recorded so far.

Dr. Malama has appealed to the members of the public to ensure they keep their surroundings clean to prevent the outbreak of the disease.

Meanwhile Dr. Malama says government has so far completed 275 of the 650 health posts under construction across the country.

He has expressed optimism that government will complete all the remaining health posts by the end the year.
