237 accidents were recorded on New Year

The Zambia Police Service recorded 237 road accidents country wide during this year’s New Year’s holiday resulting in seventeen people losing their lives.

From 30th December, 2016 at 18:00 hours to 2nd January, 2017, of the 237 accidents, 17 were fatal road traffic accidents in which 17 people died while 40 were Serious Road Traffic Accidents in which 78 people were left with serious injuries while 54 were classified as Slight Injury Road Traffic Accidents in which 74 people sustained minor injuries.

Police Spokesperson Esther Katongo tells QTV News that 126 were damages only Road Traffic Accidents in which no individual was injured.

Ms Katongo says Lusaka recorded the highest number of accidents with 82 in which two (02) people died, five sustained serious injuries while 17 had minor injuries, followed by Copperbelt which had 46 accidents out of which three people died, 30 had serious injuries and 18 had minor injuries.

She discloses that Central Province recorded 36 accidents with five deaths, 12 seriously injured and 11 slightly injured; Eastern recorded 29 accidents with three deaths and 11 serious injuries.

As for Southern Province, Ms Katongo says the province had 16 accidents with one death recorded, eight serious injuries and six minor injuries, Luapula had 16 accidents with one death, 11 serious injuries and 20 slightly injured and the lowest was Northern Province which had one accident, one death and without serious injuries followed by Muchinga with two accidents and no fatality.

The Police Spokesperson says during New Year festivities, the country was generally peaceful and did not record major incidences of crime.

She says from the same period, the police recorded 98 cases of Assault OABH, 19 Burglary and Theft, 15 House Braking and Theft, 11 cases of breaking into a building and committing a Felony therein, Six Thefts from Motor vehicles, four murder cases and two cases of Theft of motor vehicles.
