ZABS commences standard compliance spot checks

The Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) has started conducting spot checks and market surveillances to check compliance levels on regulated products.

ZABS head of Marketing and Public Relations Hazel Zulu says ZABS in collaboration with the Lusaka City Council, Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) and the Ministry of Health last week conducted joint spot check inspections on some shopping malls in Lusaka to assess compliance levels on regulated products in order to ensure that consumers are protected from substandard products

Ms Zulu says ZABS believes working in collaboration with other government agencies such as LCC, CCPC and the Ministry of Health will make its operations even more effective as their different legislations will complement each other.

She names some of the shops visited as Pick n Pay at Levy Park and Makeni Shopping Malls, Shoprite at Cosmopolitan Mall and Spar Chawama. Others are Food Lovers at both Levy Park and Makeni Shopping Malls.

Ms Zulu says the Inspectors were checking for expiry dates, product packaging and labeling, dates of manufacture and presence of batch numbers.
