The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) has adopted resolutions that were agreed upon by stakeholders during a road safety indaba that was held on 22nd September 2016 at Mulungushi International Conference Centre.

This follows a meeting with various stakeholders held at the RTSA Head office on 10th October 2016 in Lusaka.

Among the resolutions that were reviewed by stakeholders was a requirement under the road service licence for operators to provide refresher courses for PSV drivers annually, ensure long distance PSV drivers are paired and make defensive driving mandatory for PSV drivers.

Other resolutions are; introduction of a road traffic observers programme for whistle blowers, make it mandatory for operators to display RTSA Call Centre Number stickers on the buses and increase penalties on drink driving.

The agency will now proceed to engage the Ministry of transport and Communication as well as the Ministry of Justice to introduce other statutory Instruments that will make it easier for the Agency to enforce compliance to some of these resolutions.

The National Indaba on road safety is one of the strategies employed by the Agency to reduce road crashes in the country.

RTSA Head of Public Relations Fredrick Mubanga tells QTV News in a statement that the agency is pleased to note that the introduction of a ban on night driving among PSV has been introduced following other proposals made during the 2016 National Road safety Indaba and has called on transporters to adhere to it as it is now law.

Mr. Mubanga says the Agency will also continue to engage stakeholders in an effort to ensure the implementation of the statutory instrument (SI) No. 76 does not have adverse effects on mobility or safety.
