LAZ condemns State House attacks on Judiciary

The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has strongly condemned recent attacks on the Judiciary by Presidential Press Aide Amos Chanda.

LAZ president Linda Kasonde says Mr. Chanda’s statement made during the ZNBC TV program Sunday Interview appears to have suggested that any ruling made by the Courts against a Member of Parliament from the ruling PF is not in the interest of justice.

Ms. Kasonde has told a media briefing in Lusaka this morning that this is besides suggesting that there will be repercussions against any judge that rules against an MP from the ruling party.

She states that LAZ finds such remarks to be unfortunate given that many of the election petition cases have gone to the Higher Courts

Ms. Kasonde says the sense that LAZ is getting is that such comments by Mr. Chanda are meant to influence the decision of the Appeals Court.

She states that LAZ also finds the threatening remarks by Mr. Chanda that the Judiciary should not push the Executive to push for judicial reforms in the Kenya’s style as unacceptable.

Ms Kasonde adds that what is more worrying to LAZ is that Mr. Chanda claimed to have been speaking on behalf of President Edgar Lungu in his capacity as PF president.
