Chembo toasts Barclays Cup win

Zesco United coach Tenant Chembo says Saturday’s Barclays Cup triumph has lifted the team’s spirits, especially after relinquishing the Faz Super League title this season.

Zesco denied their successors, Zanaco, the opportunity of a 2016 League and Cup double on Saturday following a 1-0 Barclays Cup final win at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.

“It is a relief and this is the only Cup competition that we have in the country and if you lay your hands on it, it is a consolation,” Chembo said.

“It’s an enormous win that we should cherish and treasure.”

The win handed Zesco an unprecedented fifth Barclays Cup, three more than Power Dynamos, while Zanaco have never won the competition in 10 successive attempts.

Saturday’s win came just three weeks after Chembo was elevated from assistant coach following the resignation of George Lwandamina, who left after three years in charge to take up an appointment at Tanzanian giants Young Africans.

Striker Idris Mbombo, who had been knocking on Zanaco’s goal all afternoon, broke the deadlock in the 71st minute to ensure they stay unbeaten in each of the last five finals they have played.

The win was Zesco’s second over Zanaco, in the same competition after defeating the Bankers 2-0 in the 2010 final played across town at Nkoloma Stadium.
