The Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) has sent back seized Lyons Peanut Butter to Zimbabwe.

ZABS Head Marketing & Public Relations Hazel Mafwenko says the Lyons Peanut Butter was seized and confined from various shops around the country between August and October this year.

Ms Mafwenko says this was because laboratory test results indicated that the peanut butter contained higher than acceptable levels of aflatoxins.

Mrs. Mafwenko says high aflatoxins levels in food is a potential health risk as it may cause health complications in consumers.

She says the product recall and subsequent sending back was witnessed by a team of ZABS staff and local representatives of Lyons trading company on dates between 31st October and 2nd November 2016 in Lusaka.

Mrs. Mafwenko has further disclosed that a total quantity of 2, 205 cases of 6 by 1 kg containers was confined by ZABS Inspectors between August and October 2016.

She explains that the consignment was loaded onto a truck and trailer registration number ADD 6323 T/ ACP 3655 and sealed with a ZABS seal number 001527.

She says ZABS will continuously inspect all products that fall under mandatory standards to make certain that those that do not comply with the set standards are immediately removed from the market to safeguard public health and safety.
