Lungu calls for African efforts in silencing guns

President Edgar Lungu has called for collaborative efforts in silencing the guns on the African continent in order to preserve peace and security.

Speaking when he officially opened a two days African Union Peace and Security Retreat in Lusaka this afternoon, the Head of State says the use of guns and other weapons remains a threat to humanity on the African continent.

President Lungu says there is no need to delay in silencing the guns on the continent, stating that time to plan and preserve the future is now.

He says there is need to leave behind a legacy of peace on the continent by working together in dealing with all root causes of violence in Africa.

President Lungu has observed that the use of guns and other weapons has resulted in the loss of many lives on the continent.

Speaking at the same event, African Union Peace and Security Council Chairperson Ambassador Osman Kamara says the council decided to convene for the retreat because of the state of peace on the continent which is of great concern.                     

And Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba says the council meeting will try to find solutions to the many challenges facing the continent in terms of peace and security.

The African Union Peace and Security Council Retreat is being held under the theme “practical steps to silence guns in Africa by 2020”.
