The Civil Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) says increasing cases of corruption are contributing to the high levels of poverty in the country.

CSPR Executive Director Patrick Nshindano says it is worrying that some government officials continue to engage in corruption.

Mr Nshindano says corruption increases poverty levels as funds are diverted from the sectors of the economy they are meant to improve.

He says despite government efforts to reduce poverty, these are undermined by high levels of corruption and misappropriation of funds.

Mr Nshindano notes that the country is facing hard economic challenges, hence the need to put in place stiff measures to demonstrate tangible actions against corruption especially by senior government officials.

He states that government officials should instead endeavor to serve as examples and ensure that the distribution of public resources is done well.

Mr Nshindano has since called on the head of state to demonstrate political will to prosecute every individual found wanting.

President Edgar Lungu yesterday expressed concern over the increasing cases of corruption among top government officials.
