The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has announced a motor vehicle amnesty on penalties and interest for a period of 30 calendar days, to all individuals and firms whose vehicles either have no Customs clearance or were wrongly cleared.

This is in accordance with Section 171 (5) of the Customs and Excise Act.

In a statement, ZRA Commissioner General, Kingsley Chanda says the relief is effective 1st November, 2016 to 30 November, 2016.

Mr. Chanda says the Authority has noted with concern that due to the ease with which motor vehicles smuggled into the country get registered, the Government is losing a substantial amount of Revenue in unpaid taxes and duties.

He says the relief being offered is on condition that the affected individuals furnish ZRA with all the necessary details about such transactions and pay all the principle taxes within the stated period.

Mr Chanda states that during this period, ZRA will only collect taxes due on the vehicles without applying penalties, interests and impounding affected vehicles.

He says after the expiry of the notice period, the Authority will proceed and conduct intensified enforcement operations aimed at seizing such vehicles and prosecuting all such individuals and companies.

Mr Chanda has since urged the general public to take full advantage of this rare opportunity and regularise their tax affairs on motor vehicles.
