NUSFAZ welcomes ban on maize exports

The National Union for Small-scale Farmers of Zambia (NUSFAZ) has welcomed the move by governmmaize-bagsent to ban the exportation of maize.

NUSFAZ president Frank Kayula says the rate at which maize is being taken out of the country is worrying, and that banning its export is the best move for now.

Dr Kayula says if the act is left unchecked, the country is likely to run out of the commodity thereby threaten the country’s food security.

He notes that the maize leaving the country is more than what Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has bought in the ongoing marketing season.

Dr Kayula states that the exportation of the commodity should only be allowed once it has been ascertained that the country has enough stocks.

He has since appealed to the ministry of agriculture to take stock of the amount of maize the country has before allowing the export of the commodity.
