The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has charged that the action by the Zambia Police Service to arrest opposition leaders for exercising their democratic and constitutional right is turning Zambia into a Police State.

YALI Governance Advisor Isaac Mwanza says President Edgar Lungu, who is the Commander in Chief of armed forces should restrain the Police from infringing on the rights of those in the opposition.

Mr. Mwanza says Zambia cannot afford to continue witnessing the perpetual arrest of opposition leaders.

He has called on the Zambia Police to learn to respect citizens’ democratic rights and avoid acting as though the country is One Party State.
