Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Chanda Kasolo has expressed concerned that maize smuggling into neighboring countries has continued despite security measures put in place to ensure food security in the country.
Mr. Kasolo says government regrets that a lot of maize has been siphoned into neighboring Malawi and Mozambique.
He states that government will not tolerate any form of Maize smuggling as this is a threat to national food security.
Mr Kasolo has since appealed to people in eastern province to report any suspicion trucks carrying maize and help government fight maize smuggling.
Meanwhile Mr. Kasolo has maintained that Eastern Province will not meet the target of maize purchases in the ongoing crop-marketing season due to the low supply of maize from farmers to the Food Reserve Agency.
