COMESA begin application consideration for Somalia, Tunisia

COMESA has officially begun the consideration of applications made by Somalia and Tunisia to join following their formal requests to be part of it.

The initial consideration of their applications is being done by the Nineteenth Meeting of COMESA Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General which has opened in Lusaka today.

And COMESA Assistant Secretary General for programmes Kipyego Cheluget has observed that the realization of integrating the COMESA region is almost coming to fruition.

Dr. Cheluget has urged delegates at the meeting during its official opening to work steadfastly towards fully attaining it.

He has also appealed to the delegates to support also the passing and implementation of the Protocol of the COMESA Fund.

Speaking at the official opening of the meeting Attorney General Likando Kalaluka observed the need to strengthen COMESA’s dispute resolution mechanism.

Mr. Kalaluka says there is need to ensure that judicial independence of the COMESA Court of Justice is upheld.

He notes that over the years this Court has contributed immensely to the interpretation and application of the COMESA Treaty and other legal instruments.

Earlier President of the COMESA Court of Justice Lombe Chibesakunda told the meeting that considerable progress has been made to update Rules of Court.

Justice Chibesakunda has disclosed that the Court has also stepped up its publicity activities with 2015 two publicity seminars in Kenya and another seminar in 2016 in Madagascar being such activities.
