Lwandamina axed as Zambia coach

The Football Association of Zambia (Faz) have axed George Lwandamina as Chipolopolo coach.

Lwandamina leaves the post fourteen months following his appointment as caretaker coach, that culminated in Zambia’s failure to qualify to the 2017 Africa Cup with a game in hand after a 3-2 away loss, during a penultimate Group E qualifier against Guinea Bissau on June 4, 2016 .

Faz has appointed another caretaker coach to replace Lwandamina with ex-Zesco United and Zanaco trainer Wedson Nyirenda the man Football House has handed temporal reins.

“Mr Nyirenda also subsequently will be acting national team coach,” Faz general secretary Ponga Liwewe said in a statement.

“The process of recruiting as expatriate coach is still underway with finalization between Faz and the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Child Development at an advanced stage.”

This is Nyirenda first national appointment since 2007 when he was Zambia Under-17 coach.

Lwandamina will now focus fulltime on Zesco United, whom he has just led to their debut appearance in the semifinals of the Caf Champions League, where they face Mamelodi Sundowns at home in Ndola on September 17 and away in Pretoria on September 24.

Lwnadamina leaves the job with nine wins, eight losses and seven draws from his 24 games in charge since replacing Honour Janza in June, 2015.
