Mumba granted K10, 000 cash bail

MMD Faction President Nevers Mumba has been granted a K10, 000 cash bail by a Lusaka Magistrate Court.

Dr Mumba had earlier pleaded not guilty to one count of criminal trespass before Magistrate David Simusamba.

Dr Mumba was arrested on Friday after he stormed the ZNBC TV 1 newsroom on 8th September seeking clarification on a news item aired on the main news bullet at 19:00 hours relating to the dismissed presidential petition.

Earlier, State through Prosecutor Victor Choongo applied that Dr Mumba be denied bail because he is a threat to national security as he vowed to stop the inauguration of President Edgar Lungu slated for tomorrow at Heroes Stadium.

Mr. Choongo said he was more than ready to bring to court witnesses to prove that Dr Mumba does not deserve to be released on bail.

But Dr. Mumba’s lawyers Martha Mushipe and Robert Simeza argued that their client was a public figure who has served the nation in different positions including that of the Republican Vice President.

And in his thirteen paged ruling, Magistrate Simusamba rejected the State’s application and granted Dr. Mumba K10, 000 cash bail with two traceable working sureties.

Magistrate Simusamba has since set 4th and 6th October as the dates for commencement of trial in the case.
