Hope for Human Rights Executive Director Smart Chanda has expressed shock that some political parties went on rampage to de-campaign the referendum which was aimed at bettering the lives of the people.

Mr. Chanda tells QFM News via telephone that it is unfortunate that in Zambia there are leaders who can stand against the things that are aimed at improving the lives of the people they intend to lead.

Mr. Chanda says it is surprising that a biggest political party in Zambia in the name of the UPND encouraged their supporters not to participate in the referendum which eventually flopped.

He says this was a golden opportunity for Zambians to better their lives but that it went to the worst.

He has appealed to political party leaders to have direction even as they seek to lead Zambians.

Mr. Chanda has also appealed to the government to ensure that they find time and resources before 2021 to hold an independent referendum so that the Bill of Rights can be added to the constitution.
