Police recorded a total number of 9,074 Road traffic accidents during the second quarter of 2016, out of which 421 were fatal.

In a statement, Police spokesperson Rea Hamoonga says a total of 705 persons died in the second quarter of 2016 as compared to 563 persons who died in the first quarter of 2015 which represents an increase of 142 persons.

He says 1,762 persons were seriously injured in the second quarter of 2016 as compared to 1,603 persons in the same period in 2015 representing an increase of 159.

Mr Hamoonga says 2,652 persons were slightly injured in the accidents that occurred in the second quarter of 2016 compared to 2,117 in same period in 2015, representing an increase of 535

Mr. Hamoonga further states that most of the accidents on the Zambian roads are attributed to excessive speed, misjudging clearance distance, failing to keep to the near side and cutting in.
