Elections were marred with irregularities – FODEP

The Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) says the just ended elections failed to meet the standards of a free, fair and credible election.

FODEP says the general election was marred with irregularities, citing serious errors in vote tallying for the presidential election.

Speaking during a post election press briefing this morning, FODEP president Shepherd Chilombe say considering the scale of irregularities and lack of transparency in the transmission, counting and announcement of results, his organization is of the view that the election failed to adhere to the republican constitution, electoral process Act, regional and international standards of free, fair and credible election.

Mr. Chilombe say while FODEP understands that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) worked under adverse conditions, there is still a lot of work to be done to address anomalies and inefficiencies that characterized the election.

Meanwhile, the FODEP President says the regional voting that characterized the elections is alarming.

Mr. Chilombe says the way people voted shows that they were not voting on the basis of understanding the manifestos of political parties, but were voting on tribal lines.
