Police arrest 151 UPND supporters for rioting

Police have arrested 151 UPND supporters in Southern Province for riotous behavior following President Edgar Lungu’s re-election in last Thursday’s elections.

Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga says 53 people were apprehended in Choma, 53 in Mazabuka, 26 in Monze, 6 in Maamba,4 in Namwala, 6 in Sinazongwe, and  in Kazungula Districts respectively.

Mr. Hamoonga adds that in Choma, Police recorded 5 cases of arson after the unruly mob ran amok setting people’s property ablaze following the declaration of the final presidential election results. Rae-Hamoonga

He says in Mwapona Compound in Choma, some UPND supporters set ablaze a house belonging to Kelvin Simimba, 45 and also set on fire a restaurant belonging to Juliet Jere, 33 of Choma’s Overspill destroying various properties.

Mr. Hamoonga says the unruly crowds also blocked a road using a rail slipper at Muzoka, while some UPND supporters in Monze Town and surrounding compounds burnt tyres and logs and later blocked roads with various objects.

He adds that at Chibuyu Community Police post eight (08) motor vehicles parked at the police were damaged.

Mr. Hamoonga however, states that the situation has since been brought under control and that Police have since intensified both foot and motorized patrols in the province to ensure that all those that would want to abrogate the law with impunity are brought to book.
