Ahly fight back to hold Zesco

ZESCO UNITED FC NEWEmad Moteab’s late strike earned Al Ahly a 2-2 draw with Zesco United in a CAF Champions League, Group A game played at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria on Friday night.

As a result Zesco from Zambia moved to the top of Group A standings, while Egyptian giants Ahly moved to position three.

The visitors made their intentions clear just two minutes into the game when Jesse Were forced Ahly goalkeeper Ahmed Abdel into a low save.

However, the Kenya international did hand Zesco a surprise lead four minutes later when he headed home at the far-post to make it 1-0 to his side.

In the 19th minute, Zesco attacker Jackson Mwanza burst into the Ahly box and he fired over the crossbar as the visitors looked to double their lead.

The home side equalized on the half-hour mark when Ramy Rabia pounced inside the Zesco box following a corner-kick and he made it 1-1 for Ahly.

It took only five minutes for Were to restore Zesco’s lead when he cut inside into the Ahly box and he fired past Abdel to make it 2-1 to the visitors.

Amr Gamal nearly snatched an equalizer for the home side three minutes before halftime, but he placed his header inches wide of the target.

The striker who was ineffective was replaced by experienced striker Emad Moteab as the home side looked to level matters.

In the 63rd minute, Zesco head coach George Lwandamina made a tactical change pulling out defender Kondwani Mtonga for midfielder Anthony Akumu.

Zesco captain and goalkeeper Jacob Banda had to come and deny Ahly striker Moteab a shooting chance with 15 minutes left on the clock.

However, Banda was beaten with five minutes left on the clock when Moteab scored with a good finish to ensure that the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
