Polls close, as vote counting commences

Polls have officially closed as people now wait to know the outcome of the elections.

The voting process proceeded largely peacefully with an isolated incident of violence recorded in Itezhi Tezhi district.

Zambians flocked to polling stations in their numbers to vote for the president, members of parliament, mayors, council Chairpersons and councilors.

Voting ended at exactly 18:00 hours in most polling stations, while those that opened late have had to extend the voting time to compensate for the lost time.

Most polling stations in the country recorded a high turnout of voters with some voters turning up at polling stations as early as 03:00hours this morning.

And some of the voters talked to by QFM News expressed happiness that the voting process has been smooth and peaceful.

Zambians will now have to wait for the results to know who will lead them for the next five years.

Preliminary results from polling stations are expected to start trickling in by 20:00 hours with full results expected to be known in the next 48 hours.
