The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has deplored yesterday’s violent clashes in Lusaka’s Mtendere Township involving PF and UPND cadres.

ECZ Chairperson Esau Chulu says the commission is saddened and disappointed that the country is witnessing such violence between rival party cadres less than 72 hours before the elections are held.

He says the violent behavior by the cadres is unacceptable.

Justice Chulu has told a media briefing that the PF and UPND leaderships should take responsibility irrespective of who provoked the situation.

He says the commission is worried that such acts of violence will be a blemish on Zambia’s historic record of holding peaceful elections.

Justice Chulu has particularly reminded the PF that as the ruling party it has a bigger responsibility to lead by example and uphold peace during the last hours before elections and after the polls.

He states that supporters and cadres of the ruling party must be kept in check, while the opposition UPND leadership should also ensure that its supporters and cadres are equally kept under control.

Justice Chulu has warned that failure to do so might result in voters being traumatized and thereby discouraged to turn up to vote.
